A traditional "vowel diagram" can be obtained by plotting the vowel formants in a graph where the horizontal axis is (F2-F1) and the vertical axis is inverse F1. Here is a vowel formant plot of the vowels shown in the figure with the MR images. Information in F1 and F2 According to Lagefoged (2006), each vowel has three formants, i.e. three overtone pitches. In the first vowel, F2 is high (close to F3), but in the last vowel it is low (close to F1). Vowels traditionally known as front have F1 and F2 a good distance apart, like the first vowel here. Vowels traditionally know as back have F1 and F2 so close that they touch, like the last vowel here. Since the 1950s, it’s been customary to interpret F1 as tongue height, and F2 as tongue position, with reference to the Bell vowel model (Sidney Wood, 1982, X-Ray and Model Studies of Vowel Articulation, Working Papers 23, Department of Linguistics, University of Lund; and The Bell vowel model on this website). The pitch of the air in Container 1 (Formant 1) is high. The pitch of the air in Container 2 (Formant 2) is low.

More generally, the frequency of F1 varies inversely with the height of the vowel, such that low vowels have high values of F1 (up to 1000Hz or more) and high vowels have low values of F1 (down to 250Hz or less). F2 varies with the frontness of the vowel, such that back vowels have F2 frequencies down to 1000Hz or less, and from vowels have F2 values of 2500Hz or more.
